The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras announced on January 5 that students will virtually host the 27th edition of the annual cultural festival Saarang. From January 6 to 9, this will be a four-day event. “The theme for Saarang 2022 is ‘Lores and Legacies,’ reliving the recollections of fables and legends passed down through generations,” it said.
The event will be streamed live for the second year in a row, despite the worries of a COVID-19 epidemic. Around 35,000 people are expected to attend the event.
According to IIT Madras, with a 27-year history, Saarang is firmly established in South India’s cultural landscape. In the run-up to the major event, a team of over 800 students has been working on several events for nearly a year. It is one of the country’s largest student-run festivals, with about 100 events.
Professor Bhaskar Ramamurthi, Director, IIT Madras, stated that due to these very unique times, this is the second year in a straight that our students are virtually conducting both the cultural and technical festivals, which usually take place in January. Nonetheless, based on last year’s experience, students have demonstrated that a new paradigm does not always imply a festival lacking in spirit, participation, or quality. Last time, we had a great time at the festival. I’m confident that this year, with the experience gained, it will be even better.”
“I applaud our students for embracing the new scenario and forging ahead.” Though there is nothing like an offline, face-to-face celebration, because cultural festivals, in particular, are all about relationships and socialization. “However, they are demonstrating what can be done and how, despite the circumstances, one can overcome problems and achieve a reasonable approximation to what would be the perfect cultural event,” he continued.
‘Indie Night,’ ’51 Hours Short Film Making,’ and ‘Anime Fest’ are among Saarang 2022’s events and shows.
