Following a search in a treacherous high-altitude area, a missing World War II plane has been identified in India’s remote Himalayas nearly 80 years after it crashed with no survivors.
In the first week of 1945, a C-46 transport plane carrying 13 people from Kunming in southern China vanished in stormy weather over a mountainous stretch of Arunachal Pradesh.
“This plane vanished without a trace and was never seen or heard from again. It just vanished.” According to Clayton Kuhles, a US adventurer who led the operation in response to a request from the son of one of the lost flight’s passengers.
Kuhles and a team of indigenous Lisu guides forded chest-deep rivers and camped in subzero weather at high altitudes during the trek.
Three Lisu hunters died of hypothermia in the same place in 2018 when they were stranded in an unseasonably warm September blizzard, according to Kuhles, while two others “just escaped alive.”
Last month, however, the team found the plane on a snow-covered mountain top, where they were able to identify the wreckage by its tail number.
Bill Scherer, whose officer father was aboard the plane when it crashed, tasked Kuhles with searching.
“All I can say is that just knowing where he is makes me ecstatic. It’s both sad and happy, “Scherer, who is based in New York, told AFP by email.
Hundreds of US military planes went missing during World War II in the theatres of operations in India, China, and Myanmar. According to Kuhles, some aircraft were lost due to hostile fire from Japanese forces and were brought down by ice damage, hurricane-force winds, and other severe weather conditions
